Installing Windows machine in Virtual box


Most of them want windows XP to support their project applications. Unfortunately, windows XP support was
discontinued. Our IT team won’t allow to use Windows XP machine in office. We can install windows XP 
machine in virtual box and start to use. Many of colleagues are doing same thing in my office.

But every time they have issue with installing windows XP in virtual box. Today we will see about how to 
install Windows XP machine in Virtual box.


Make sure that you have Windows XP machine ISO file with you.


Click ‘Add New machine’ button in virtual box.


Give the name for the virtual machine.




Click Next




Choose Enough RAM for virtual machine.




Choose ‘Create virtual hard drive now’. And click create.




Choose VDI and  Click Next.


Click Next.


Choose Disk size and Click Create.


Now go to Settings.


In General, Click Advanced Tab and choose options as below.




In System option, Click Motherboard tab and enable ‘Enable IO APIC’


In Display Menu, Increase Video memory.


In Storage Menu, Attach Windows ISO file


In Network Menu, Choose attached to ‘NAT’.




In Shared Folders menu, add a shared folder. So that we can share files between Guest and Host.


Click OK. Again Click OK to save settings.


Now start the machine.


Install steps will be same, please do the installation.


Now install virtual box Guest additions in the windows XP. Use right ctrl to come out of virtual machine
Go to Device menu and click  ‘Install Guest additions’.




Click Next.




Click Next.




Click Install




Click Finish, machine will reboot.
We successfully installed Windows XP in virtual box.


Post Installation checks.



Let us do some post checks to ensure everything is fine.

Network:



Go to CMD and type ipconfig




NAT network was assigned to the virtual machine. So that virtual machine can access to outside world.
Go to My Computer and check shared drive is link is available.
Check that you can access host machine files via shared drive.






Everything is working as expected.

  4. Wifi wont work inside the virtual machine. You should get external wifi adapter and attach it to VM, and then reboot the virtual machine.
